ABOUT HUSKY DAY

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. On Sunday, September 27, the Harrison Huskies will host the inaugural Husky Day at Harrison High School to raise awareness for childhood cancer. More than 400 young athletes from grades 1–6 are expected to participate in a day of football, fun, and community spirit.

Inspired by the original Wildcats Spirit Day held at Westlake High School, Husky Day is expected to continue the tradition, drawing nearly 1,000 attendees for a large outdoor community celebration featuring athletic games, family activities, and opportunities to support the fight against childhood cancer. The success of this event is made possible through the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of local families, businesses, and sponsors.

In addition to exciting football games, attendees can enjoy music, food trucks, concession stands, 50/50 raffles, and Husky apparel for sale. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Ty Louis Campbell (TLC) Foundation, helping fund groundbreaking childhood cancer research.

OUR MISSION

The Ty Louis Campbell Foundation is a nonprofit organization that funds innovative research and clinical trials specifically geared toward the treatment of the most aggressive childhood cancers with a strong focus on brain tumors, because they are the most common tumors found in children and the most fatal.

Our mission is to help fund the intelligence and technology that will improve long-term survival rates and minimize side-effects for children diagnosed with the deadliest cancers, while helping to care for families when their child is in treatment by providing financial assistance and uplifting experiences.

Less than four percent of the national cancer research budget is directed toward childhood cancer, which includes 12 cancer types and hundreds of subtypes that are unique to children. The majority of childhood cancer research funding is provided by nonprofit organizations, therefore research labs rely on family-founded organizations like the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation to fill the funding gap.

OUR IMPACT

The TLC Foundation understands the tremendous responsibility that comes with ensuring that all fundraising efforts benefit the most promising, innovative studies geared toward treating the most aggressive childhood cancers. The clock is ticking, and the goal of the organization is to fund research that will benefit both the children currently battling cancer, as well as future pediatric patients.

In addition to a dedicated team of researchers and medical advisors who advises the team on investments, the TLC Foundation has also partnered with powerful like-minded nonprofits who are making tremendous strides toward better treatment options for childhood cancer, including: The Children’s Brain Tumor Project at Weill Cornell Medicine, The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Solving Kids’ Cancer, A Kids’ Brain Tumor Cure, Imagine for Margo, the Bibi Fund and the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

  • Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among children in the U.S.

  • A child is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes.

  • The average age of a child diagnosed with cancer is 6 years old.

  • Childhood cancer is very different from cancers found in adults, and research is desperately needed to understand them better.

  • One in five children diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. will not survive.

  • For those who do survive, more than 75% will have chronic health problems due to the long-term effects of cancer treatments.
