On Saturday, September 25, as the predawn fog was lifting off Lake Mahopac, volunteers were getting into position on the course while others were checking in participants. Athletes were warming up, placing their bikes in the transition area and pulling on their wet suits. There was excitement in the air as the athletes waited on the beach for the first horn to blow, signaling the first wave of swimmers into the water. At 7am the 9th annual TYathlon was off to a smooth start!
As the first finisher triumphantly crossed the finish line, John Hirsch flashed the numbers one and four to signify that Ty would now be 14 years old, which would make him eligible to compete in the event. Once all of the Sprint Triathlon participants completed the race after their grueling swim, bike and run, the 5K kicked off with a scenic run along Lake Mahopac. The MSA Cheerleaders from Mahopac enthusiastically welcomed each runner as they crossed the finish line!
The 9th annual TYathlon hosted almost 250 total participants and raised over $35,000 to support the Ty Louis Campbell Fellowship at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell. Through this investment, TLC pays the salary of an experienced doctor/researcher who is dedicated to collecting genetic bio-information on all types of pediatric brain tumor samples in order to provide individual treatment protocols with precision medicine to children battling cancer.
